I mean, I love what I do. I really do. But sometimes I have to pinch myself at the opportunities that come my way. This summer my job as a destination wedding photographer took me to Tonihutte in the Bavarian Alps. What an amazing adventure it was. I took the lovely Amy with me, and we set off on our adventure to Germany. I‘d been lucky enough to be asked by Alice and Jan to shoot their Picturesque mountainside wedding in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Travelling up the mountainside
After our journey from the airport, we travelled by coach to the bottom of the Zugspitze. This is the tallest peak in Germany and wow is it beautiful?! We were picked up by Jeeps that journeyed up the picturesque hillside towards the wedding venue. I was genuinely in awe of the incredible Alpine scenery. The lakes and mountains all around this landscape is not unlike a fairytale.
“We’ve got a wedding to prepare for!”
The morning of the wedding luckily brought sunshine to the mountaintop. Alice was getting ready with her bridesmaids and mum. Whilst Jan and his groomsmen helped ready the venue for the upcoming celebrations. Clouds above the mountain in the distance threatened rain – so the marquees were put up just in case. There was a definite buzz around the area, and I couldn’t help but get excited for the day ahead!
Ceremony in the Bavarian Alps
Alice, in her beautiful wedding dress, walked down the aisle with her Dad to music played on the keyboard. The tears in both the bride and groom’s eyes showed how much this meant to them both. They had a strong, authentic connection which was clear for everyone to see. Alice and Jan made promises to each other and exchanged rings. All under the watchful gaze of their family and friends. They had their first kiss to rapturous applause and exited under plumes of confetti.
Up into the Hillside for Couple Portraits
Amy, Alice, Jan and I journeyed up through the forest to search for the best views for their photographs. We found a spot overlooking the gorgeous Alpine scenery, perfect for capturing their shoot. Surrounded by roaming cows and towering trees, Alice and Jan Spent quality time together on the mountain top. The views framed the couple beautifully – what better place to have my camera and a fantastic couple. Not long after, we raced back down the mountain to beat the incoming rain!
Food, Speeches and Dancing under the Stars
The speeches were done partly in English and partly in German much to the joy of the crowd. This inclusivity of language for the guests, speaks of Alice and Jan’s generosity of spirit. The speeches were fantastic and everybody was either crying or laughing. After the brilliant buffet, the newlyweds danced to the sounds of their band into the very early hours of the morning. Their wedding truly was a magical experience and I am so honoured and privileged to have been a part of it.
